Welcome to Ham Radio for Kids!

When I was 12 years old, my Grandpa Boo got me interested in radio communications using a walkie- talkie, then a Citizens Band (CB) radio. My friends and I would play hide-n-seek, army or other bicycle games using our walkie-talkies or CBs to communicate. It was a lot of fun!

During my sophomore year in high school, I met a new friend named Steve Cook (WB6IFG) who had his ham radio license. After hearing him talk to people in other states and countries, I knew I wanted to get my license. After studying and taking the exam with the assistance of my elmer Mr. Louis P. Malory (WA6DVK), I finally received my Novice license (WN6KTF) on April 15, 1975, at the age of 15.

Since then, two of my kids have received their ham radio licenses at the ages of 11 and 12 years old.

Many kids, as young as 8 years old and older kids over 70 years old, have successfully studied and passed their license, and so can you!

What will ham radio allow me to do?

  • Meet new friends with common interests

  • Learn about electronics

  • Improve reading and writing skills

  • Improve math skills

  • Learn more about geography and world issues

  • Learn more about computers

  • Learn the International Morse Code

  • Collect stamps from all over the world

  • and much more!

Can I study ham radio with my parents, grandparents or friends?

Yes! Why not? Studying with others is a lot of fun. Ham radio can also be a lot of fun for the family.
