How do I Locate and Buy a Ham Radio?

General Information

The best way to buy a ham radio is to locate a ham radio operator by visiting a hamfest or club in your area and asked what they recommend. Buying a ham radio does not need to be expensive.

You first must decide what frequency range that you want to listen and/or transceive on.

U.S. Ham Radio operators are licensed to use applicable sections of the HF, MF, VHF and UHF bands.

High Frequency (HF) Rigs (3 MHz to 30 MHz)

A nice used HF radio to buy cheap (approximately $200 to $300 US) would be a Kenwood TS-520 or TS-830. In addition, ICOM's IC-756 PRO or IC-706, Yaesu's FT-920, FT-1000, etc., and Kenwood's TS-930, TS-940, etc. are excellent more expensive choices.
